DON'T CLOG THE RAMP

Top 5 ways to not clog the boat ramp

            Prepare at your house

             – Getting your boat ready at home will minimize your time on the boat ramp. If your boat is fully rigged and ready, you can spend less time in the staging area. This will open a spot for the next boater, and you’ll be on the water faster.

            Communicate

             – Chat with the other boaters! Even small talk can reduce tense moments at the boat ramp. If your boat is ready and you’re jumping ahead of someone, simply let them know that you’re dropping in. Being cordial with other boaters can be beneficial, especially in smaller communities.

            Move your boat over

             – If you are running your own shuttle, don’t just leave your boat at the bottom of the ramp. Pull it off to the side to make room for other boats. This will let other boats have space while you are off running the shuttle.

Do not inflate your boat at the ramp

             – Ideally, your raft should be inflated when you pull up to the ramp. If you don’t have a trailer and you must inflate it fully, do it way off to the side. Since this process is time consuming, make sure you’re not blocking anyone who does have a trailer. Being unprepared like this should mean you take extra caution to be courteous.

Know how to back up a trailer

             – Being proficient with this is essential for all boaters. Do not learn how to back up a trailer at the boat ramp. Practice in an empty lot and get a feel for it. When it’s your turn to back up your boat, do it efficiently and properly.

Dry Dropper Fishing

            1. Use a Longer dropper – With higher flows paired with fishing out of a boat, often times people don’t use a long enough dropper. Try a 3 foot length of tippet or even 4 feet. You’ll often have more success this way, since your flies are getting into the strike zone faster.

Fish 2 nymphs – Fishing 2 droppers is a great way to give the fish more options, and it will also sink faster. Fishing 2 heavy nymphs can greatly improve your success rate. A large stonefly with a smaller nymph behind it is how we normally run 2 droppers.

Practice accuracy – With longer droppers, it is important to not cast too close to the bank. Your hopper may land in the right place, but your nymphs can get caught on the bank. Always be aware of how long your droppers are to avoid snags.

Use different tippet sizes – We like to run thicker tippet to our hopper, and smaller tippet to our droppers. This way, if you break off, you’ll only lose your nymphs. The thinner tippet also allows your flies to sink faster since there is less resistance. This gets you in the strike zone quicker.

Use multiple patterns – Since our local fish see a lot of the same hoppers, we like to mix up our patterns and our colors. Use a different color chubby or even a lesser known hopper. If the fish see something they’re not used to, it might work in your favor.

           Good Day on the Water

Allow yourself to be guided – Your guide is on the water just about everyday. You may have LOTS of experience on other rivers, but your guide has the knowledge to be successful on our local waters. Our flies may be different than you’re used to , and our rigs may be different as well. Listening to your guide will ensure that you gain knowledge of our local waters so that you can have success on your own. Soak up the knowledge and enjoy your day!

Tell your guide what goals you have before your trip starts – Going over your goals and expectations will allow the guide to get a better understanding of your style. This communication is essential and will allow you and your guide to be on the same page. You may really want to work on your streamer technique, or you may want to toss dries. Your guide must take this into account to ensure a satisfying day on the water.

Be honest about your skill level – It is best to be up front about your fly fishing skill level. If you aren’t honest, your guide will be able to tell your skill level right away. It is totally ok to be a beginner! and our guides are usually guiding beginners. Learning the basics and the proper techniques is essential to becoming a better angler. Be a beginner! It’s where we all started.

Ask Questions – Don’t be afraid to ask too many questions. Your guide should have an answer to all of them. Maximizing your learning experience is our goal. Any knowledge you can gain from your guide is a huge plus! Ask away.

Try new techniques – If you tend to be a die hard nympher, you may want to experiment with streamers or dries during your guided trip. Your guide will help you improve your technique and add these skills to your arsenal. This will help you become a more well rounded angler.
