Fishing Program

Fishing days will start around 8 am in the flats skiffs. Experienced Captain Ivan, Captain Owen, and Captain Evan will be our fly guides and they know the marsh very well, and all the spots where the fish gather. Since the lodge is right on the gulf, the runs to fishing spots are only 15 to 20 minutes maximum which is a nice perk vs other destinations. All the skiffs are parked at the houseboat, so once you have breakfast and coffee, just hop in the boat and start your full day of fishing.

 Shots to redfish and black drum are not far, generally 30-40 feet, and some shots are even shorter. However it is important to be accurate with your cast. Being able to put your fly in front of their nose is necessary, since these fish can't see that well. Redfish move on the fly quickly, and will attack anything that comes in their zone. As far as sightfishing goes, casting to a bull redfish is about as exciting as it gets. Shots at 20 pound fish are very common, with even bigger fish spotted regularly. We are searching for tailing redfish digging through the mud. We also target wakes as these fish move through the shallow water. Shots at large black drum are common as well.

. November is when the big bull redfish show up. These fish are over 30 inches and will generally take you to your backing on the initial run. Some fish can be 40 inches or even larger. 8 wt and 9 wt rods are what is used, however I found that a 9 wt is the best option. Most of the fish are in 2 feet of water or less. Having flies with different weights is important. Bead chain, small lead and medium lead eyes are all good to have in your box. With these fish, presentation is much more important than the specific pattern you use. 

Once you finish your day of fishing, come back to the houseboat for a great homecooked meal by Joey and Taylor the owners. Generally fresh shrimp, crawfish, deep sea fish and other local seafood are common dishes. Enjoy renovated rooms, private bathrooms, and a large living room with a bigscreen tv. Take in the views of the marsh and the gulf of mexico, and do it all again the next day.
